Solar Panel Grants and Funding Available in Greater Manchester

Solar panel installation has never been more affordable for Manchester homeowners thanks to a range of grants, government schemes, and financial support programmes available in 2026. Whether you are in a low-income household looking for fully funded installation or a homeowner wanting to spread the cost, there are options worth exploring before you pay the full price upfront.

ECO4 Scheme: Free Solar for Eligible Households

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is the most significant scheme for Manchester residents. Running until March 2026, ECO4 requires major energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in low-income and vulnerable households. If your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G and you receive qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Child Tax Credit, you may be eligible for fully funded solar panel installation. Some qualifying criteria also apply to households with low income and high energy costs, even without benefits.

We work with accredited ECO4 installers across Greater Manchester to help eligible homeowners in Salford, Oldham, Rochdale, and Bury access this funding. The scheme covers not just solar panels but also insulation, heat pumps, and heating upgrades. If your property qualifies, the installation is 100% funded and you pay nothing.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

While not a grant, the SEG is a guaranteed income stream that improves the economics of every solar installation. Under this scheme, all large energy suppliers must offer a tariff for excess electricity you export to the grid. As of 2026, rates range from 3p to 20p per kWh depending on your supplier. Octopus Energy's Agile Outgoing tariff often pays the most, while British Gas and EDF offer simpler fixed rates around 15p per kWh. Over a year, a typical 4kW system in Manchester can earn £250-£400 through SEG payments.

Green Mortgages and Home Improvement Loans

Several lenders now offer green mortgages and home improvement loans specifically for renewable energy installations. Barclays, NatWest, and Halifax all have products that let you borrow additional funds at preferential rates when installing solar panels or other green tech. The savings on your energy bills often cover the loan repayments, meaning you are cash-flow positive from month one. For a £7,000 solar installation at 4% APR over 10 years, monthly repayments are roughly £70 — easily offset by £90-£120 in monthly bill savings.

Local Council Support in Greater Manchester

Some Greater Manchester borough councils run their own energy support programmes. Manchester City Council, Salford City Council, and Trafford Council have all offered solar grant top-ups or zero-interest loans in recent years. It is worth checking your local council's current energy efficiency page or calling their housing team. As MCS certified installers, we can also advise on whether your property qualifies for any borough-specific schemes when we conduct your free roof survey.

We recently helped a family in Salford secure ECO4 funding plus a council top-up, reducing their total installation cost from £8,500 to under £2,000. It is always worth asking.
