Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar Panels?

If you already have solar panels on your Manchester home but are now considering battery storage, the good news is that retrofitting a battery is absolutely possible. In fact, it is one of the fastest-growing segments of our business. Homeowners across Didsbury, Salford, and Stockport who installed solar 3-5 years ago are now coming back to add batteries and maximise the value of their existing systems.

AC-Coupled vs DC-Coupled: What's the Difference?

When retrofitting a battery to an existing system, AC-coupled batteries are almost always the best option. These batteries connect to your home's electrical system after the inverter, rather than between the panels and inverter. This means they work with any existing solar setup, regardless of inverter brand or age. Popular AC-coupled options include the Tesla Powerwall 2, GivEnergy All-in-One, and Sungrow batteries. DC-coupled batteries require a compatible hybrid inverter and are usually only viable if you are already planning to replace your inverter.

Compatibility and Survey Requirements

Before quoting for a battery retrofit, we conduct a compatibility survey. This checks your existing inverter model, your consumer unit capacity, and your home's electrical infrastructure. Most homes in Greater Manchester can accommodate a battery without major upgrades, but older properties with limited consumer unit space may need a minor distribution board extension. We also assess your current generation data if you have monitoring, to recommend the right battery size.

  • AC-coupled battery: Works with any existing system, £2,500-£5,000
  • DC-coupled battery: Requires hybrid inverter, £3,500-£6,500
  • Consumer unit upgrade (if needed): £300-£600
  • Full installation and commissioning: 4-6 hours

How Much More Will You Save?

Adding a battery to an existing solar system typically increases annual savings by £400-£700, depending on system size and usage. A homeowner in Chorlton with a 4kW system who was saving £800/year saw their savings jump to £1,300 after adding a 5kWh GivEnergy battery. The battery captures previously exported energy and lets you buy cheap overnight electricity on a time-of-use tariff. With SEG rates around 15p and grid electricity at 35p+, every kWh stored and used later saves you 20p.

We installed a Powerwall for a family in Altrincham who had 4kW panels from 2019. Their payback on the battery alone is under 6 years, and they say the independence from grid fluctuations during peak times is priceless.
